This was our penultimate day in the saddle for Subway Pro Cycling so our opportunities for earning one more win for the team were becoming very much finite! It wasn’t to be our day, despite Sam Horgan’s best efforts in making it into the early move, he was doomed after having had an extended warm up (rode the 60 odd k’s out to the course) as he is still building from a horrific crash in October. We picked him up along with other remnants of the break in the last 20k as the peloton sped its chase.
This field was stacked with some of New Zealand’s best cyclists so fireworks were expected. Ironcially, but not entirely as a surprise, not all the big guns ‘made’ the race today. It is those that are hungry for results who often come out firing at these local events. So it was Northey who continued his run of ‘hungerness’, which combined with some sublime form has netted him and his team (well done to his Node 4 team mate Cronshaw on winning today) some awesome results of late.
Back to my race – well life in the bunch could be either really easy for the most part if you were spectating, or really hard if you wanted to fruitlessly (without much chance of catching the front) attack in order to get away. I chose the later and my legs are reminding me of my decision right now. Still looking forward to tomorrow’s criterium – suppose to be 28degrees – bring it on!
